Spontaneity sometimes works best.

02/02/2011

I got a new external flash. My roommate was free. Therefore a photo shoot must be done. No planning, no preparation, and no idea to use this new flash of mine without reference to a manual (but who reads those anyways). So my roommate just scrubbed herself out and this is what came out of it.

apocalypse now?

02/02/2011

My roommate and I teamed up to do our first fashion editorial together and decided the clothes fit a more apocalyptic themed shoot. Great team and learning experience for us all. Now that I’m dabbling in fashion photography more and more and switching over to that side of photography; I can only take what I learned from this shoot and bring more to the table on upcoming. Having full access to up and coming designers through AiS allows me to develop my portfolio more and more. This new internship through TCM Modeling Agency is only adding to the pot of experience in the fashion industry. Building from the ground up, I have a long ways to go to learn more and hone my skills and knowledge in the fashion industry. But with free access to develop and hone skills….who could say no to that!

Abstract Expressionism

08/26/2010

I was lucky enough to shoot with an incredible dancer who allowed me to finally make my abstract dance shoot come to life.  With these photos I wanted to portray the art of movement and the human body and how it interacts.  Isolating it from an environment it allows the subject to come to life.

Enjoy!

Portraits

08/26/2010

Portraits from my Portraiture and Fashion classes this quarter.  All I can say is I love shooting people and couldn’t have asked for better people to get to know from all these shoots.  Such fantastic people as a whole to be able to participate in shooting with, it makes my what some would say or what I couldn’t even consider a “job” so much fun.

More to come!

Abstract Architecture

08/26/2010

Requirements.  I’ve found I either love them or hate them or combine the two.  Starting this quarter at school an Architecture class was required.  No easy way out but to put it bluntly “suck it up and deal with it”.  I knew I wasn’t interested in shooting commercial architecture and wouldn’t want to pursue it as a job opportunity.  Basically I was in the class because it was required and there was no sweet talking my way out of it.  I love old architecture.  My previous travels to Europe has instilled a deep appreciated of Gothic Architecture.  The lines, the stone, the massiveness, and history that is attached to it is astonishing.  As you walk up to a building that has lasted thousands of years through weather, wars, and daily use demand appreciation.  The presence it commands as you walk up to a building that has that type of intricate detail as well as massive presence does not allow you to pass it by unnoticed.  It forces you to look upon it and appreciate its value.  Aside from that shooting corporate locations, residential houses, etc. for this class was not what I had in mind for shooting architecture.  However, it has pushed me to look at lighting in a new way.  Looking at a “bigger picture” lighting scale and paying attention to small details such as correcting verticals and distracting elements in a room.

Lucky for me my professor added in a quirky assignment.  He sent us to the Experience Music Project here in Seattle to shoot the building.  No “requirements”.  Just shoot the building as you would portray it.  This is my take on the building.

And for those of you who have not seen the building I recommend googling the Experience Music Project in Seattle to see the building as a whole.  It’s just asking to be gazed upon.  The quirky architecture is astonishing.

Enjoy!

The Gaze

05/06/2010

“Tat tvam asi” – That which you are.

Psychologist Jacques Lacan describes  one of his theories as “The Gaze”.  Where a subjects autonomy is brought into question by the projection of their ‘identity’ onto an exterior object.  As a person grows and matures they began to see themselves a certain way through social interactions, finding their own self identity.  The mirror is a representation of the identity.  As Lacan saw it was a representation between the imaginary and the real.  The mirror image gives a sense of imaginary of how we want to be while giving a sense of wholeness to the broken reality.

Through this series I wanted to portray the feeling between the imaginary and the real.  The disconnection between the body and mind.   How we want to see ourselves and the imaginary image we began to form around these ideas.  By looking through the viewer through a first person perspective we can began to see how the mind becomes disconnected from the body and the broken reality forms into one.

World Out of Focus

03/22/2010

Focus.  Sharpness.  Detail.  3 words that define most of photography.  Portray what is truly there in detail.  In real life however, a lot of us walk around in a fog, seeing the world in detail.  Ironic?  Yes.  Does the infinite imagery seen daily truly register in the vast mass of never ending unknown that we call our brain?  We see people, buildings, grass, clouds, material objects, etc.  Becoming desensitized to the world we see but don’t truly ‘see’.  Not actually seeing what is happening underneath or even right in front of us.  Walk with the world out of focus and you see a new world.  Throwing the world out of focus has been a new undertaking of mine.  Rather than focusing on putting the world in focus, every image is thrown completely out of focus.  For myself this forces me to reevaluate the world in a whole new light.  Makes me stop and think about what the person, place, or thing is truly about.  The absolute essence of the subject and dissect what it’s purpose, goal, or idea it is trying to portray.

Feel free to comment on the photos on your thoughts and interpretations on each or all of the photos.
